Based upon the combination or proportion of the 5 elements contained within a particular substance [dravya]; determines the taste [rasa], qualities [gunas] & actions [karmas] the substance [dravya] will possess. We can also appreciate, that, doshas are the functional organization of the same various qualities. For example, - vāta represents the qualities of ether & air which represents movement - pitta is fire & water which represents transformations of the body - kapha being water & earth provides lubrication, stability & structure The various combinations of the elements creates 6 tastes, and we can appreciate how these tastes influence the doshas & dhātus [or body tissue]; hence, food having medical and therapeutic value.
