I have joined my first ever yoga class 15 years ago. I had no clue what to expect. I had no knowledge about breathing techniques or any of the yoga poses. Walking into this ‘first’ yoga class felt really intimidating, but here’s what you should know before stepping onto that mat: (according to my own experiences) (as a student and a teacher) 1️⃣You don’t need to be flexible! Yoga helps build flexibility over time. And not only flexibility, it helps us build strength & balance too! 2️⃣It’s totally fine to rest. If you need a break, take it. Find a teacher makes you feel comfortable about this. 3️⃣Nobody is watching you. Everyone is focused on their own practice, not judging yours. 4️⃣You might not understand all the cues at first. That’s okay! Just follow along as best as you can. 5️⃣Try different types of classes and different teachers. You share the energy in the room, if one particular session didn’t connect to you, try a different teacher. 6️⃣It’s normal to feel wobbly or unsure. Yoga is a practice, not perfection. 7️⃣Your breathing might feel all over the place. Coordinating breath with movement takes time. Don’t stress if you feel out of sync ~ it will come naturally with practice. 8️⃣Props aren’t just for beginners. Blocks, belts, and bolsters make poses more accessible and help improve alignment. Even experienced yogis use them. 9️⃣Some poses will feel possible at first. That’s normal. Everyone starts somewhere and poses that feel tough now might feel effortless later on. 🔟Yoga isn’t just about the poses. It’s about connecting with yourself, finding stillness and feeling good in your body. You don’t have to touch your toes or do handstands, arm balances to experience the benefits. If you’ve ever been nervous about joining a class, you’re not alone! What was your first yoga class like?
