What is myofascial release | What's the difference between myofascial release vs. massage

Jeffrey S. O'Guin D.C.

In this practice

Key teachings

  • Definition of myofascial release (MFR) as the manipulation of muscle and connective tissue
  • Understanding fascia as a continuous, spiderweb-like connective tissue matrix
  • Key differences between targeted myofascial release and general relaxation massage

Ideal for

  • Individuals interested in understanding bodywork modalities
  • People experiencing muscle tightness, knots, or fascial restrictions
  • Yoga practitioners seeking complementary therapies for enhanced flexibility and recovery
  • Anyone considering Myofascial Release versus traditional massage

Lesson

Steps

  • Conceptual application of Myofascial Release (MFR) for specific bodily restrictions
  • General massage concepts for overall muscle relaxation and tension relief
  • The principle of manipulating soft tissues to improve circulation and stimulate nerve fibers

Benefits

  • Increased circulation and blood flow to muscles and fascia
  • Stimulation of nerve fibers leading to pain relief and improved coordination
  • Release of fascial restrictions, 'kinks,' or 'trigger points'
  • General relaxation and stress reduction (typically associated with massage)

Transcript

what is myofascial release or as some people would say fascial and what is the difference between this myofascial release stuff and a massage because if you look at both of them side by side you might think those look pretty damn similar to me so what I want to do is kind of talk to you about what proponents of myofascial release would say the main differences aren't if you were trying to decide between what a massage be right for me or this new term that everybody is talking about myofascial release which one might be more suited for me would try to dive down and figure that out for you let's first say what is fashio or facha or this myofascial release what does that actually mean if you break the word down Maya just means muscle fascia is this connective tissue the spiderweb type matrix that really combines and holds it all together it groups individual muscles together and it groups entire muscle complexes together and it runs as this continuous system throughout the body collectively they call it the myofascial system what massage and myofascial release will both do is they're trying to use their hands in some way usually sometimes practitioners will use instruments and other gadgets but most of the time you'll see people using their hands and they're trying to manipulate the muscle or this connective tissue they're trying to put force in their knead the muscles do something and the attempt is to either bring more circulation and blood flow into those muscles it is to stimulate these little nerve fibers that we have throughout the muscles and throughout the facha when you stimulate those it feels good it relieves pain and it can bring more coordination into that surrounding area some people say it works out the kinks the fossa will get either the muscles will get not evil say which are the trigger points or that fossa will become a little restricted it should have a little bit more of a flexibility apply ability to apply ability to it let's say maybe after an old injury it just it doesn't have that give that it should have so they said we'll work what we're gonna do is work that fossa out work those shoulder restrictions out so again these are all ideas that practitioners will talk about when they're working on the muscle or working on the facha so let's get down to the nitty-gritty of what might be different so really this comes down to what would you expect if you got a massage versus myofascial release usually if you go get a massage they are going to put you in a nice dark room you might get half naked and they are going to put on some relaxing music and you're probably gonna lay there for an hour and what they're trying to do is just relax you in general general relaxation and especially work through the muscles and try to just get the muscles to not be so tight so taut that's the general idea of a massage now there are some practitioners that are gonna say they do my official release and these other things deep tissue sports massage and all of this I just kind of want to give you the general can plan on being laying down for an hour plan on them usually wanting to work you from head to toe they're gonna work all of the tissues in your body they want to try to spend an equal amount of time in each tissue okay so contrast that to what you would usually expect if you were to get myofascial release with myofascial release the practitioner is trying to be very specific on the area that you need it the most whatever your restriction or your hang-up is because ultimately what they are saying they're doing is in addition to working the muscles we're also working this connective tissue this fossa trying to work these kinks out we're trying to get these restrictions out of there so they're gonna be very selective with it where they work so you're probably not gonna be laying down for an hour you're probably gonna keep all of your clothes on unless it's a specific region they might say well let's lift this up and get in there but for the most part you're gonna be fully clothed and you're ten ten minutes usually could be as little as three or four minutes it might be as long as 15 minutes but it's a much shorter period of time the idea is going to be more therapeutic in nature those are the main differences but all of that being said you could go to a really good massage therapist that does myofascial release and you could go to somebody who says they they do myofascial release and you're still there for an hour think of what is this person doing they're just groping all over my body so it really is probably gonna come down to which which therapist do you select did you select a therapist that really knows what they're doing and is there interest really in working with that key area if you're going for a myofascial release but hopefully that sums it up for you for the people that find that an interesting topic because they do on the surface if you were to watch somebody do one for a minute and the other one for a minute they would look very similar if you have any questions comments anything like that please leave them below I like questions I like to give answers to questions so I'd love to hear your comments or your questions thank you
