The nearest translation of Satya is truth, but it doesn't mean exactly the truth. In this video "truth" is explained from a Yogic angle, ...
So when comes to the next Patanjali's part
of Yama, he speaks about Satya. Satya means truth. That is, the nearest word is truth.
But when we speak from the angle of Patanjali, when you are expressing truth, it should not
come as an expression from a belief system. See when you are telling and expressing a
fact, your expression is not coming under a belief system. So even, to what extent a
belief system should not come is, you don't have a belief that always I should tell truth.
That is also a belief system. Then it is no more valued as a right expression. See always
we take one classical example to explain this aspect. See once in a forest a meditator is
living. Everybody used to have a good relationship with him. Everybody totally trusts him. What
he tells that is true, because he doesn't have any expectations from the world. He don’t
has any any feelings against anyone, he is pure non-violence. And he is always happy,
all the qualities of a very evolved soul he has, and he is meditating and staying in his
forest. So at that time, one time he encounters a situation, a person is running, coming running
towards him with all the ornaments, jewels, he is very rich. By look he recognises him
as a king. So why that person is running towards him is, some persons are chasing behind him
to steal all the ornaments from him. So then he comes and he asks with a heavy breath like
"Oh, what shall I do, where shall I hide?" So then he shows the way "Go on hide there."
So then the people who are chasing to kill him and to steal the ornaments from him, they
come and ask him, the meditator: "Do you saw a person running here, where he is, with all
the jewels?" What answer he should give? If he shows, they kill him and they will take
the jewels. If he don't show, he is lying. He is a very truthful person. So then, in
such situation what happens if you tell truth, it is out of your ego, you are telling truth,
out of your faith system, you are telling truth, out of a belief system that belief
“Always I have to tell truth”. You should tell truth, there is no question about it.
Always you should tell truth in fact but, what is the truth? What is called as true
and what is not called as true, it is not morality. What is truth, is what supports
the existential humanity. It is not morality. Humanity is oneness. You should feel, he will
feel the oneness with the king and he sees who gets more damaged: the robbers, they are
doing a wrong thing. And what they get, a few jewels they will get, but what he loses,
he loses the precious thing, the life. Life is very precious than any jewel or anything.
So then, what becomes the truth is supporting humanity what he expresses. Supporting the
egoless state what he expressed. He is not doing for any self-benefit. He don't get anything
out of it. Even if he tells the robbers "He is there" then also he will not get anything
but what he gets is: I stood for my belief to tell truth. He is getting a good reputation.
Then tomorrow people will speak "Oh he was so truthful, even he didn't care, even he
sacrifices the king to be true." People may appreciate or people may condemn tomorrow
he is a liar. On that day he lied to the robbers. “Oh I want to keep my reputation as a good
person who is telling always truth, that’s why it's okay, I tell." Then for what you
are doing this act. Whether you are doing it, act, to build your ego, to build your
belief system, and whether you are doing an act to be egoless, to be loving, to be affectionate,
to be caring, to be compassionate? So humanity… human qualities expressed unconditionally,
is truth.
