hello magnificent human beings my name is Landon with yoga New Mexico where we focus on empowerment alignment and strength you are in the right place capable and strong what are we going to do today it is fire log pose if you've never heard of that that's okay because maybe you've heard of square pose or maybe you have heard of double pigeon it's all the same thing it is this posture right here so we are going to dive into some of the technical aspects of this posture so if it's something you would like to learn more about stay here and please roll out your mat while I roll the intro [Music] screen thank you so much for being here it is time to look at fire log pose also known as double pigeon and in the Yin tradition it is called Square pose so you may need a block you may not and I've noticed that this posture is very very difficult for a lot of people and then magically other people who actually aren't really flexible in a lot of areas they can do fire log perfectly with no problems so my buddy Carlos if you're out there watching I see you um anyways yeah it's a a really really great hip opener and um because it is so difficult for a lot of people lots of people really do not like this posture and um for me personally I am much better at getting my knees to come farther and farther down after I am fully warmed up so it's definitely a process for for myself for many people so I think a really great way to come into this posture at first is perhaps by coming into pigeon first so you take your knee placing it up here by your wrist you kind of slouch on over and then bring your shin so it's parallel with the top of your mat this is a very important point because really both shins need to be parallel at the top of your mat and it's easier to move one of them at a time rather than both so what I'm saying is don't do this it's much more difficult it's a lot easier to move one and then move the other bringing it all the way around and here you are in your fire log your double pigeon now there's lots of things we tend to do inappropriately wrong just not right it's not the best alignment in this pose and one of them is favoring one side so in a lot of my classes I see folks going like this and you're leaning way over when really you should be focusing on sitting equally on your sits bones so when you do this that bottom knee is probably going to lift up off but here I'm sitting equally on my sits bones and it's totally okay to bring your hands around behind you and prop yourself up so your knees may be lifted way off but that's okay because if you're bracing yourself back here it gives this some time to relax and it's always kind of like this fun game right because you relax you relax you relax oh and you realize you're favoring one one side so that's the biggest point is don't favor one side and the next point is as you breathe try to lower your knees down at the same rate so you inhale create space in your hips exhale lower them down at the same time inhale create space exhale lower them down at the same time and ideally the bottom of this knee knee is going to touch the mat the same time this knee touches your ankle that's the kind of first thing I really notice is people tending to to cheat a little bit and you know come on to one side or another and another thing is is that this pose gets easier the less you have your foot by this knee so sometimes I see people with the foot in the middle of their calf or just below the knee and if you notice my knees can come down basically flat if I have my ankle in a little bit but the second I really start to stack my ankle truly on top of my knee then things get a lot more difficult right so if you're one of these folks who says I can't really feel it that could be it is that you just have your leg over here but when you really start to put your ankle on top of the kind of meaty part of your knee here not directly on the joint but more kind of on the the I guess it's the bottom of your quadricep technically over here then you can really start to get into those hips here's another tip about your 9090 so let's assume you have your shins perfectly parallel with the top and you can't actually get you know this foot onto your knee over here which is perfectly fine one day you'll be able to get there but for now we need to figure out some kind of modification right so what's really good to do is one of two things is to actually lay way back onto your forearms and then bring this ankle on top of your knee so notice how much my uh knees are you know how far apart my knees are from both the mat and then this knee to this ankle right and this is totally fine and then you can start to breathe and lower things down so starting here back on on your forearms is a really good way to be able to start to let your hips open up and relax and if you are not near doing that then still keep your shins perfectly parallel with the front of the mat flex your ankles and then move your ankles so they're underneath your knees and it's going to feel weird cuz the Shin kind of presses into the front part of this calf here but that's okay and you don't want you know your KNE is far out and your ankles close in you really want everything stacked on top of one another as best as you can and you may feel this right away in your hips you may not but if you don't then with a flat back very slowly begin leaning forward and this will really start to get into those hips on the complete opposite side of the spectrum if you can get into that fire log very well and you have your knees basically all the way down then it's a good idea to line your chest up with that lifted knee here and then start to walk your hands out over that knee and then you'll start to really feel that in your hips so lots of options here in your fire log pose thank you so so much for being here I do greatly greatly appreciate it if you would like to learn more about some yoga postures I do a
