Instructions

Ocean breathing, or Ujjayi breath, is a simple yet powerful way to reset your nervous system anytime, anywhere. That deep, steady sound you create when practicing—like waves rolling in or even Darth Vader—activates your vagus nerve, helping you stay calm, focused, and in control.

On the mat, it anchors your practice. Off the mat, it’s a quick fix for stress, focus, and better sleep.

Steps

  • Ujjayi Breath (Ocean Breath)
  • Controlled glottis constriction for sound production
  • Nasal breathing for both inhalation and exhalation

Benefits

  • Calms the nervous system by activating the vagus nerve
  • Enhances focus and concentration
  • Reduces stress and anxiety, promoting self-soothing
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Anchors physical yoga practice

Transcript

good one more time inhale through your nose now let it out with a h sound now close your mouth I'd like you to breathe just through your nose for the rest of the class but see if you can keep making that ocean or that whisper sound in the back of your throat both on the way in with a whisper sound and on the way out with a whisper sound we call this ocean breath and it helps to calm down your nervous system it stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system system and it'll help to train you to respond to stress in a way that's more adaptive to self soothe especially in these poses which is helpful on the mat but also off the mat
