Transcript

So there's this image in the Western world where yoga has become almost this contortionist gymnastic form where you see all these flexible and bendy men and women tying their legs around their head and standing on their fingertips and doing some sorts of crazy things. Now if you walk into an average yoga class that's not what you do well I'm hoping that's not what you do. It can be a very it's a poorly understood concept flexibility actually does more for the body than just make you stretch your hamstrings and fall into a split every now and then it's better organ function there's enhanced states of mood so there's a lot more going for flexibility than just being able to achieve upwards so different things determine flexibility it's determined by genetics, hereditary, lifestyle, injuries what activity do you do, do you sit at a desk all day, do you stand, do you run all day we're also flexible in different parts of our body for example I may be very very open in my legs but I may be tight in my shoulders for someone else it may be different each pose differs each pose demands a different amount of openness in the body so flexibility is not a prerequisite to starting yoga practice you don't have to be flexible the tighter you are the more fun we have as yoga instructors if you are not too flexible then it is a very very very good idea to come to yoga class through yoga practice your body starts to open up you develop strength you develop flexibility we have a lot of options for different poses if your hamstrings are tight we can do straps we can do blocks if you're not if your shoulders are on you there's so much we can do so you want to come into class and you want to work patiently you want to work with an instructor who can help you modify you didn't see them start maybe they were tight when they began so you want to get started and someday be an inspiration to somebody else so I hope that helps and if you have any questions about flexibility and yoga or any other questions that you want answered just let us know my name is Arun Dati and we are at Aham Yoga and Dragni
