Instructions

Learn how yoga's mind-body connection promotes natural healing and conditioning. This video is just one of many that offers health and wellness tips at Laura Cloukey, DO, Medical Director, The Villages Health®, discusses yoga's three main benefits.

"There are many health benefits of yoga but three stick out in my mind: first is the mental. Studies have shown that if you can take somebody who's a schizophrenic; who's completely removed from their mind, and connect them to their body, it connects their mind.

"The second benefit is the cardiovascular benefit with reduction in blood pressure and pulse. Being able to control your blood pressure and your pulse without medication, and just with the ability of using yoga and meditation to center yourself, is the epitome of mind-body connection.

Lastly, and this is probably the one that most people attribute to yoga health benefits, is the musculoskeletal system. People with chronic neck and back pain, especially chronic neck pain, suffer from migraines. In studies of yoga versus traditional medicine, results have shown a 30 percent reduction in medication need with yoga practitioners versus 5 percent in the traditional medicine group. The thing about yoga is that it's so old it's new again. It's 5,000 years old, so why not embrace it today?"
