Yoga for Jaw & TMJ Relief
TMJ disorders and jaw tension affect millions. Yoga offers gentle, effective techniques to release chronic holding patterns and restore comfort.
Understanding Jaw Tension
The jaw holds tremendous emotional and physical tension:
- Stress response - We clench during anxiety
- Postural habits - Forward head position strains jaw
- Sleep patterns - Nighttime grinding (bruxism)
- Emotional holding - Unexpressed feelings stored in jaw
How Yoga Helps

- Eases associated headaches and neck pain
Nervous System Benefits
- Activates parasympathetic response
- Reduces stress-induced clenching
- Improves body awareness
- Promotes relaxation
Effective Practices
1. Lion's Breath (Simhasana)
Inhale deeply. Open mouth wide, stick tongue out toward chin, exhale forcefully with a "ha" sound. Eyes wide, looking up. Repeat 3-5 times.
2. Jaw Releases
Let jaw hang open naturally. Gently move side to side. Make small circles in both directions. Finish with gentle opening and closing.
3. Fish Face
Suck in cheeks, purse lips like a fish. Hold for 10 seconds. Release and massage cheeks. Repeat 5 times.
4. Resisted Opening
Place fist under chin. Open mouth against gentle resistance. Hold 5 seconds. Release slowly. Repeat 10 times.
5. Tongue Stretches
Open mouth, extend tongue fully. Move tongue up, down, left, right. Circle tongue around lips. Relax.
