Yoga for Lymphatic Flow & Immunity

Movement practices to stimulate lymphatic circulation, reduce swelling, and support immune function

Yoga for Lymphatic Health

The lymphatic system is your body's waste removal and immune support network. Unlike blood, lymph has no pump - it relies on movement, breathing, and muscle contraction.

Understanding the Lymphatic System

Key functions:

Signs of Sluggish Lymph

How Yoga Stimulates Lymph

Deep Breathing

The diaphragm acts as a lymph pump. Deep belly breathing creates pressure changes that move lymph.

Muscle Contraction

Movement squeezes lymph vessels, pushing fluid toward the heart.

Inversions

Gravity assists lymph return from lower body.

Twists

Compress and release organs, promoting drainage.

Essential Practices

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing

Lie down, hands on belly. Breathe deeply so belly rises on inhale, falls on exhale. 5-10 minutes. Primary lymph mover.

2. Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani)

Lie with legs vertical against wall. Stay 5-20 minutes. Passive lymph drainage from legs.

3. Cat-Cow Flow

Moving with breath. Compresses and expands torso, pumping lymph. 2-3 minutes.

4. Twisting Poses

Seated or supine twists. Hold 30 seconds each side. Wringing action moves lymph.

5. Sun Salutations

Full-body rhythmic movement. Outstanding lymphatic activator. 3-6 rounds.

Breathing Techniques

🌬️ Belly breathing - 10 minutes daily minimum

🌬️ Three-part breath - Fill belly, ribs, chest

🌬️ Breath of fire - Rhythmic pumping (advanced)

Lifestyle Support

💧 Hydration - Lymph is mostly water

🥗 Anti-inflammatory diet - Reduces lymphatic load

🚶 Daily movement - Walking is excellent

🛁 Contrast showers - Hot/cold alternation

💆 Dry brushing - Before shower, toward heart

Practice Tips

Morning is ideal - After sleep, lymph is sluggish

🌅 Start gentle - Don't overload detox pathways

💧 Drink water - After practice to flush

🧘 Be consistent - Daily practice most effective

Precautions

⚠️ Avoid deep inversions with high blood pressure

⚠️ Work gently if you have lymphedema

⚠️ See doctor for persistent swelling

⚠️ Cancer patients: consult oncologist first
