Instructions

1. Think of a quality or virtue you would like to cultivate more of in your life: Take some time to reflect on what is important to you. Close your eyes and turn your attention inward. Take a few deep breaths and begin to let go of any distractions or thoughts outside of your practice. Think of a quality or virtue you would like to cultivate more of in your life. It could be something like gratitude, compassion, patience, or courage. Allow yourself to feel into this quality and what it means to you. Consider why it is important for you to cultivate this quality at this time in your life.

When you have identified your intention, phrase it in a positive way using present tense language. Instead of saying "I want to feel less stressed," say "I am calm and relaxed." By stating your intention in the present tense, you are affirming it as already true and bringing that energy into your practice.

3. Notice where and how you feel that quality/virtue in your body: Feel Your Intention. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, as you inhale and exhale, imagine yourself embodying that intention. Notice where and how you feel that quality/virtue in your body. Allow that sensation to wash over you, and let your intention become a part of your being. Allow that sensation to wash over you.

As you flow between poses, focus on how you would move if you were embodying that intention. Think and feel how you can connect your intention with the pose. For example, if your intention is to cultivate patience, how would you hold a pose with more ease and steadiness? Allow your intention to guide your movements, and notice how it affects your practice.

5. Carry that intention in your day and life: After your practice, take a few moments to reflect on your intention and how it can support you in your daily life. Think of how you would walk, talk, stand, and interact with others if you embodied that intention every day. How would it affect those around you? How would it affect situations? Make a commitment to carry your intention with you.
