Lunge Pose

Anjaneyasana

Standing · beginner

Glossary: Anjaneyasana

How to

  1. Start in a standing position with your feet hip-width apart and your hands on your hips.
  2. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, step your right foot forward about 3-4 feet, bending your right knee directly over your right ankle, ensuring your knee does not extend past your toes.
  3. Lower your left knee gently to the mat, placing the top of your left foot flat on the ground.
  4. Inhale and raise your arms overhead with palms facing each other, keeping your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears.
  5. Engage your core by gently drawing your navel towards your spine and tuck your pelvis slightly for a neutral spine alignment.
  6. Direct your gaze (drishti) forward or slightly upward to maintain balance.
  7. Stay in the pose for 3-5 breaths, deepening the stretch with each exhale.
  8. To exit, lower your arms on an exhalation, place your hands on the mat, and gently step your right foot back to meet your left, returning to a standing position.
