By the end of this video, you’ll know how to approach yoga in a way that keeps your shoulders healthy, prevents you from getting shoulder pain, and you’ll understand key technique points to help protect yourself while practicing yoga. Does yoga cause shoulder pain? The answer is “possibly”, and it depends on 4 things in particular, which I’ll describe very briefly in this video. Just like any type of exercise, yoga CAN cause shoulder pain, particularly if: If you are using improper technique. You are currently injured. If you do not use the appropriate modifications or progressions (meaning if you do not have the strength to hold yourself If you lack scapular stability. Proper technique is incredibly important, and even though many yoga gurus say that yoga is “safer than mother’s milk”, it can be harmful if you’re not paying enough attention to technique. When practicing yoga, you should have a decent understanding of: the muscles involved, what you should be feeling, what to do the various parts of your body, and how to know if you’re doing it properly. If you’re not getting this from your current yoga, I would recommend seeking out a more fitness-focused yoga training workout, program, or resource. If you are currently injured, holding yourself up or lifting your arms overhead can also cause pain and delay recovery. If you have rotator cuff tears or strains, you’ll want to avoid overhead motions in particular. Exercise is necessary for recovery from injury, but you have to be doing the right type of exercise. Upper body movements like downdog, or plank generally are great for building strength, but aren’t helpful for injury recovery. Instead, make sure you are doing appropriate strengthening exercises that target the underlying weaknesses that cause pain in the first place. You’ll also want to use appropriate modifications or progressions. This involves a variety of things, but mainly means you aren’t doing something your body isn’t ready for, whether that’s due to a lack of flexibility, or a lack of strength, be sure to not push yourself too far too soon. This could mean using a wall, bending your arms, or using a strap. You want to make sure you have access to a yoga instructor or resources that shows you these necessary modifications, or you could risk injuring yourself. Finally, you’ll want to make sure you have the necessary strength in your upper-back and shoulders, with an emphasis on scapular stability. While a good yoga instructor who focuses on proper technique should reinforce these technique points, it also requires developing that body awareness through non-yoga exercises that mainly involve pulling, banded, or weighted resistance. To sum up - the answer is “no”, as long as you are doing yoga with proper technique, you aren’t injured in your shoulders, you’re using the appropriate modifications for your fitness level, and have developed the necessary strength and awareness in your upper-back. - 👉 WELCOME to your yoga for men channel by Man Flow Yoga.
