Glossary: Sirsasana

How to

  1. Begin in a kneeling position, sitting back on your heels with your knees hip-width apart.
  2. Interlace your fingers and place your forearms on the mat, ensuring elbows are shoulder-width apart, forming a stable triangle with your arms.
  3. Place the crown of your head on the mat, cradling the back of your head with your interlaced fingers.
  4. Tuck your toes and lift your knees off the ground, straightening your legs and walking your feet closer to your head, keeping your spine and neck aligned.
  5. Engage your core and gently lift one leg up toward the ceiling, followed by the other, bringing your body into a vertical, inverted position.
  6. Maintain alignment by pressing through your forearms and keeping your shoulders away from your ears, with your gaze slightly ahead on the floor.
  7. Focus on deep, steady breaths, holding the position for a few breaths or until comfortable.
  8. To safely exit, lower one leg at a time back to the mat, bend your knees, and rest in Child's Pose to allow your body to recover.
