Yoga is safe - right? So, why should teachers carry liability insurance? As you know, Yoga is an activity that usually involves poses. Here's a short lecture with Dr. Paul Jerard, E-RYT 500, YACEP, which covers points to consider regarding liability insurance for Yoga instructors.
now scar let's talk about why a teacher should have liability insurance after all yoga is safe and if you compare yoga to walking then you stop and think especially if you just look up the stats on the internet and see how many accidents there were in your country with people who were out there walking pedestrians they're usually getting hit by cars and the drivers are usually texting or not paying attention somehow or another and um just fatalities so far i've not heard of uh too much of that happening in yoga there was one time i remember in the news where someone drove through the parking lot into the yoga studio with your car so there and i don't remember if there were any students in there or not but i would say that's a rare chance i mean there's also a chance you could sit in your living room watch tv and have a plane fly through that does happen occasionally but now if we stop and we think about the safety of walking compared to yoga i love walking i love yoga i think they're both safe but if i was to compare them both i would definitely say hands down that yoga is much safer that does not mean that people can't get hurt practicing yoga all they have to do is do something wrong you have a medical condition and you just ignore it and what happens is you maybe don't tell the teacher what's going on and then what happens the instructor's kind of blindsided they didn't know you had glaucoma for example and glaucoma and inversions don't mix so that's just one thing so it's and there are many many more that's why we study to become yoga teachers but the other thing is there are more students than ever before classes when i first started teaching were very small actually the classes were five people tops in a class and now you sometimes some of my classes especially some of the classes for seniors can be 50 or more students in a class so and someone may say that's nothing i teach in a place where it's a warehouse and i teach hundreds of students that's my point there's more students than ever so what's happening is lawsuit lawsuits are becoming more prevalent and it's just because yoga is now into the mainstream it's not five people in your living room anymore it's much different than it used to be and my point is with lawsuits flying in internationally we'd have to say we want to be protected so if you have anything worth protecting you definitely should have liability insurance and if you don't have anything worth protecting i'd still have liability insurance so it's your choice but i would go with get liability insurance you
