Stephanie Carter Kelley, PT, PhD uses yoga to help people with chronic pain.
the patients that i mostly see in my classes and in my practice have had pain for a long time chronic pain persistent pain back pain neck pain knee pain many of them have already had surgeries for total knee replacements total hip replacements and they're looking for a safe way to continue exercise many people come to the practice of yoga not really knowing what it's about but they've heard that it's good for them therapeutically and so being a yoga physical therapist they realize that it's going to be a safe practice for them to go to with pain if you're in a state of chronic stress your healing time is not going to be as effective and and some of the chemicals that are coursing through your body actually delay the process of healing so what yoga can do is create the right environment for you to heal by decreasing that stress response getting you into the parasympathetic nervous system that part of the nervous system that'll let you kind of downplay all the chronic stress and create an environment for healing
