Poses

Head to Knee Pose

Janu Sirsasana

Forward fold · beginner

Glossary: Janu Sirsasana

How to

  1. Begin seated with your legs extended straight in front of you, sitting tall with a straight spine.
  2. Bend your right knee, bringing the sole of your right foot to the inner thigh of your left leg, allowing your right knee to drop out to the side.
  3. Square your torso over your extended left leg, ensuring your spine remains long and your shoulders are relaxed.
  4. Inhale deeply, lengthening through the crown of your head, then begin to fold forward from your hips as you exhale, keeping your spine straight.
  5. Reach your hands towards your left foot, either holding the foot, ankle, or shin, without forcing or straining.
  6. Allow your head to relax, directing your gaze (drishti) towards your extended leg, maintaining a soft focus.
  7. Breathe deeply and steadily, staying in the pose for 5-10 breaths, feeling a gentle stretch along the back of your left leg.
  8. To exit, slowly lift your torso back up on an inhale, releasing your hands, and extend your right leg back to the starting position before switching sides.
