Glossary: Mayurasana

How to

  1. Begin in a kneeling position with knees slightly apart and toes touching.
  2. Place your hands on the floor with fingers pointing back towards your knees, keeping the elbows bent.
  3. Lean forward, bringing the elbows into the abdomen, just above the navel. Engage your core muscles to protect the lower back.
  4. Extend your legs straight back, keeping them close together and parallel to the ground.
  5. Shift your weight forward, lifting your feet off the ground as you balance on your hands. Maintain a steady breath.
  6. Keep your gaze (drishti) forward or slightly ahead on the ground to maintain balance.
  7. Hold the position for a few breaths, focusing on the stability of your core and arms.
  8. To exit, slowly lower your feet back to the ground, bend your knees, and return to a kneeling position.
