Agnistambhasana

Hip opener · intermediate

Glossary: Agnistambhasana

How to

  1. Begin seated on the yoga mat with legs extended in front of you.
  2. Bend your right knee and bring the right shin parallel to the front edge of the mat with the right foot flexed.
  3. Bend your left knee and stack the left shin on top of the right, aligning the left ankle over the right knee and the left knee over the right ankle, with both feet flexed.
  4. If there's space between the top knee and bottom ankle, place a folded blanket or block for support.
  5. Ensure the sit bones are grounded evenly on the mat, using a cushion or blanket if needed for support.
  6. Inhale deeply, lengthen the spine, and gently engage the core for stability.
  7. Exhale, hinge at the hips, and lean slightly forward to deepen the stretch, keeping the spine long.
  8. Hold the pose for 5-10 breaths, observing the breath and maintaining a soft gaze or eyes closed. To release, inhale to lift the torso, carefully unstack the legs, and extend them forward before switching sides.
