Instructions

'This posture is from a powerful and therapeutic yoga series also referred to as 26 & 2, Original Hot Yoga or the Bikram Yoga Method.

Eagle is the only posture that opens up the 14 largest joints in the skeletal system. Beyond improving flexibility in the hips, knees, ankles, Eagle Pose is one of the best postures for improving balance and focus.

馃 Begin with feet together and bring arms overhead sideways. 馃 Lower arms out wide, bring right arm under left, hands come together in front of the face. 馃 Press elbows down and engage the shoulders. 馃 Lower down, sitting in an imaginary chair and lean the upper body back. 馃 Lift right leg as high as possible and cross it over the left leg. Bring the right foot behind and underneath the left calf muscle.

Find ease within the posture: sit back, arch upper body back, bring knees right, upper body moves left to create a straight line. Bring your stomach in and sit back further. Feet, knees, hands, and elbows will be all in one line.

猸愶笍 TIP: Squeeze your knees and thighs together everywhere that you feel contact between the two to increase the tourniquet effect of the posture. Keep your weight on the heel of the standing foot. Focus on having no gap between your wrapped foot and the back of your standing leg.

Steps

  • Eagle Pose (Garudasana) arm wrap technique
  • Eagle Pose leg wrap technique and modifications
  • Balancing on one foot with proper weight distribution
  • Engaging core while sitting into a chair-like squat

Benefits

  • Improves balance and mental focus
  • Increases flexibility in 14 major joints (hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists)
  • Strengthens core, back, and legs
  • Promotes circulation and joint compression for opening
