of two words. Surya and Bhedana. The Sanskrit word Surya means Sun, and it
refers to Pingala Nadi. Bhedana has three meanings: ‘secret,’
‘discrimination’ and ‘to pierce.’ It is also known as vitality stimulating breath. In this pranayama Pingala, Nadi is activated
by breathing in through the right nostril. SuryaBhedana pierces Pingala and activates
prana shakti in this Nadi. Significance of Surya Bhedana pranayama When Pingala flows, the mind and senses are
extroverted, the left brain hemisphere functions, the sympathetic
nervous system is active and the body is heated. Pingala nadi should not be made to function
excessively, it should be in harmony with the functioning of Ida Nadi. Unlike Nadi shodhana pranayama which balances
the breath and brain hemispheres, Surya Bhedana predominantly works on half the system. It stimulates the sympathetic nervous system
and decreases parasympathetic functions. What are the Benefits of Surya Bhedana Pranayama? Benefits of Surya Bhedana Pranayama Surya bhedana pranayama creates heat & lots

for prolonged periods because it causes an imbalance in the breathing cycle. If you are suffering from heart disease, high
blood pressure, epilepsy, or hyperthyroid then you should avoid Surya bhedana pranayama. People suffering from peptic ulcers, and acidity
should not practice this pranayama. If you have pitta dosha then avoid Surya bhedana. since, It will aggravate the pitta dosha. People struggling with anxiety, and a hyperactive
mind should not practice this pranayama. Instead, practice tranquilizing pranayamas. If your Pingala Nadi naturally predominates
during the day, it is not advisable to practice this pranayama. How to Practice Surya Bhedana Pranayama correctly? How to do Surya Bhedana Pranayama? To practice, Surya Bhedana Pranayama sit in
any comfortable posture like Vajrasana (Adamantine Pose / Thunderbolt pose)
Padmasana (Lotus Pose) Any cross-legged posture ( sukhasana/ Ardhapadmasana/
siddhasana) with a straight spine. You can take a cushion or yoga block to elevate
your hips slightly. This will help you keep your spine straight. In case if you cannot sit in any of these
postures then simply sit on the chair with a straight spine. prefer which is comfortable for you. Place the hands on the knees in desired hand

tab. Close the eyes and relax the whole body. When the body is comfortable and still, be
aware of the breath. Now Create Nasagra Mudra
Move your right hand in front of the face. Now Place the tips of the index and middle
fingers gently in between the eyebrows. Both fingers should be relaxed. Now move the thumb just above the right nostril
and the ring finger above the left nostril. The thumb and the ring finger will control
the flow of breath in the right & the left nostrils. Keeping the little finger relaxed If you don't want to keep the index and middle
fingers in between the eyebrows. Then simply fold them and press them gently
with the base of the thumb. The thumb and the ring finger will control
the flow of breath in the right & the left nostrils. Keeping the little finger relaxed Do not apply strong force while blocking a
nostril, with the ring finger or the thumb. use gentle pressure. Close the left nostril with the ring finger
and inhale slowly and deeply through the right nostril. Exhale slowly through the right nostril, keeping
the left nostril closed with the ring finger. This is one round. Technique 2: with Antar Kumbhaka (Inner Retention) Close the left nostril with the ring finger
and inhale slowly and deeply through the right nostril. At the end of inhalation close both nostrils. Maintain the
internal retention for a comfortable length of time. Exhale slowly through the right nostril, keeping
the left nostril closed with the ring finger. Slowly increase the duration of the inhalation,
retention and exhalation without straining. Time Duration for Surya bhedana Pranyama
How long you should do Surya bhedana Pranyama ? As a beginner practice for 10 reps, then slowly
increase the duration to 10 minutes. As the practice is mastered then introduce
the ratio of 1: 1:1 Inhale for the same duration, hold for the
same duration & then exhale for the same duration. This pranayama should only be done on an empty
stomach in the morning but not late at night since it awakens the dynamic energy. If you want to improve your breathing & learn
